THE COWGIRL IS NOW THE SPORTS BABE
by Mac G, Mac G's World
The immortal hot Cowgirl, Jenn Sterger, is back on the series of tubes and her new name is the "Sports Babe."
Check out the video of her timely "Sampsonite" piece. It is newsworthy in a dead man walking kind of way.
I guess the only thing to wonder now is if Sampson will wear a blue shirt/red tie combo at his "I was fired/suspended or I resign" press conference.
Oh, for those who want more information on The Sports Babe. She can golf
And bowl.

FROM THE GREAT WHITE NORTH: INTRODUCING THE ROCKET SURGEONS
by E. Spencer Kyte, Bugs and Cranks
Rocket Surgeon (noun): someone who from all outside appearance looks like they are incredibly gifted in their chosen field but in actuality is a complete and utter moron.
As sports fans, we're fortunate enough to be witness to countless Rocket Surgeons. Here are some recent noteworthy examples...
Kelvin Sampson, Head Coach, Indiana University Men's Basketball Team (for now)
You're the head man of one of the biggest, most storied basketball programs in the country. An entire state lives and dies with the success of your team. You have a clause in your contract that specifies that if you commit the same recruiting violations which you have already been fined an exorbitant amount of money for in the past you're going to get fired. What do you do? Genius... pure genius.
Ed Wade, General Manager, Houston Astros
Even people who don't follow baseball knew Miguel Tejada's name was going to show up in the Mitchell Report. So what do you do? You ship a decent outfielder (Luke Scott), a couple of pitching prospects (Troy Patton, Matt Albers) and two more players to Baltimore for him THE DAY BEFORE THE MITCHELL REPORT COMES OUT!
Did you have plans the next day or something? As a GM, chances are you were waiting to hear the results of the Mitchell Investigation, were you not? I mean jesus! It's not that hard is it?
Chris Wallace, General Manager, Memphis Grizzlies
The Gasol Trade was awful. AWFUL. You already had two point guards (Conley and Lowry), so you didn't need Crittendon and telling everyone Marc Gasol is one of the best big men in Spain doesn't matter to anyone. Freddie Weis was one of the best big men in Europe when the Knicks drafted him and we all know what happened to him. (Side Note: I still hate Vince Carter for quitting on the Raptors... but this is the sickest dunk of all-time!)
Picking up Michael Jordan's Rocket Science Moment (Kwame Brown) is okay because it gives you cap room after the season and the picks are nice, except that some of us remember the last time you had a handful of first round picks. Boston, 2001 Draft. Kedrick Brown before Richard Jefferson, Troy Murphy, Zach Randolph and Brendan Haywood. Joe Forte before Gerald Wallace, Samuel Dalembert, Jamaal Tinsley, Tony Parker, Agent Zero and Memo Okur.
Have fun rebuilding Memphis. Wait until you see what he gets you for Kyle Lowry or Mike Miller! Hope you like Canned Ham...
Mats Sundin, Center, Toronto Maple Leafs
Really? You can pretty much pick the Stanley Cup contender you want to play for over the next couple of months, potentially collect and ring and still return to Toronto in the off season when your contract is up and you don't want to waive your no trade clause?
That's really sweet and noble of you Mats, but it's a lot like the band on the Titanic continuing to play after the whole iceberg incident. "Nothing to panic about folks. Who wants to hear some more swing music? Hit it boys!"
Rob Babcock, Former General Manager, Toronto Raptors
2004 NBA Draft, 8th Pick: Rafael Araujo.
Notable Selections following Araujo: AI2, Andris Biedrins, Al Jefferson, Josh Smith, hell even JR Smith. Do I need to keep going?
2005 NBA Draft, 16th Pick: Joey Graham
Notable Selections following Graham: how about Danny Granger at 17? Right now, I would take any of Jarrett Jack, Francisco Garcia, Jason Maxiell, David Lee, Monta Ellis, Andrey Blatche or Ryan Gomes over Joey G.
Oh yeah, if you're still wondering why Minnesota got so little in the Kevin Garnett deal, it's not just because Kevin McHale wanted to help out his buddy Danny Ainge. Babcock is the team's Assistant General Manager.

KELVIN SAMPSON AND VIOLATIONS? NO... SAY IT AIN'T SO
by Sterling Gould, More Credible
Mr. Sampson sure knows how to cause a raucous, pretty much anywhere he goes. The latest drama for the Indiana Hoops Coach? Allegations by the NCAA that he was breaking restrictions already put on him that he knew already. God, that confused me just putting that down:
Indiana head men's basketball coach Kelvin Sampson has been cited by the NCAA for acting "contrary to the NCAA principles of ethical conduct" for knowingly violating recruiting restrictions that had been placed upon him, according to a report released by the NCAA Wednesday. To make a long story short, Sampson was also accused of sending false information to the NCAA. You know, to like... cover up shady business tactics and stuff. Like high school recruit Derek Elston, who got a free back pack and t-shirt while at a basketball camp hosted by the Hoosiers! The backpack was to be useful for carrying around scholastic materials. But in reality, all it will be used for is carrying around used gym clothes, notebooks littered with co-ed phone numbers, and a Gameboy Advance.
The report details multiple instances of Sampson violating the sanctions imposed upon him in May 2006 by the NCAA after it was discovered that he had made more than 500 impermissible phone calls while he was head coach at Oklahoma. Sampson's penalties followed him to Bloomington, and he was banned from making recruiting phone calls, participating in three-way phone calls or conducting off-campus recruiting visits from May 25, 2006-May 24, 2007.
Indiana self-reported violations in October 2007 detailing impermissible phone calls made by assistant coaches Rob Senderoff and Jeff Meyer, and Sampson said at the time he unknowingly had participated in some three-way calls in which Senderoff called recruits then patched Sampson through without Sampson knowing Senderoff was still on the line. Senderoff was later fired.
My cell phone bill is pretty stout (that's because I'm hopelessly on the line for 1-800-Fat-Girl), but I'm pretty sure it pales to comparison to Indiana's bill:
# Sampson knowingly participated in three-way phone calls with Senderoff and prospects Yancey Gates, William Buford, DeJuan Blair, Demetri McCamey, Ayodele Coker and Devin Ebanks. He also participated in speakerphone calls with Senderoff and prospect Marcus Morris.Damn, dude is really gettin' after those recruits. If only he put this much effort into not violating NCAA regulations.
# Sampson was present during one or more recruiting calls placed by Senderoff to prospect Kenny Frease in which Senderoff made phone calls to the student-athlete, then handed the phone to Sampson. Sampson also spoke with the mother of prospect Bud Mackey via Senderoff's cell phone while Senderoff was with Mackey's mother.
# Records showed Senderoff also used his home phone for impermissible recruiting calls on a number of occasions despite Senderoff telling investigators that he had not used his home phone for recruiting calls. In fact, Senderoff placed at least 30 phone calls that were violations from his home phone.
# Sampson and Meyer impermissibly recruited Elston during a two-day sports camp June 30 and July 1, 2007. During that event, Meyer told Elston's high school coach, Travis Daugherty, that Elston would be receiving a scholarship offer from Indiana in the near future. Elston, however, had not completed his activities in the camp, which made contact with him impermissible, and Elston returned to camp activities the following day. It was during this contact that Elston received the t-shirt and backpack in violation of NCAA rules.

BEYOND THE ARC: THE BIG TEN IS OFFENSIVELY CHALLENGED
by Noce, Chicago Bull
After watching Illinois fall to Maryland in what pretty much was an exercise in futile offense, I started wondering why Big Ten basketball teams never match up well against the ACC. Is it because they have three new coaches trying to rebuild disheveled programs? That may be part of it, as Iowa, Minnesota and Michigan all lost with first year coaches Todd Lickliter, Tubby Smith and John Beilein, respectively. That can't be the only reason though, because even if they only lost those three games, the Big Ten still could have won the Challenge right? Wrong.
The one glaring difference between Big Ten basketball and ACC basketball is the presence of a go-to scorer who can be counted on the put the ball in the hoop. Besides Indiana's Eric Gordon and Michigan State's Drew Neitzel, there are no other players in the Big Ten who can create their own opportunities to score. What's even worse is that Gordon is a freshman, even though he appears to be head over heels more skilled than anyone on Illinois, Iowa, Northwestern, Minnesota or Michigan.
While all those aforementioned losing teams were busy throwing the ball around the outside and waiting for someone to step up, defenders knew all they had to do was take away the inside game and force the outside shot. From there all it takes is a solid rebounding night on the defensive side and the game was over. The Big Ten has such an awful time scoring baskets that it averaged only 70.7 points per game during the Challenge.
I understand that the conference is based around defense, as they held the ACC to an anemic 77.8 points per game average over the tournament, but only one player from the Big Ten managed to score over 20 points in a game during the tournament and guess who it was? If you said Eric Gordon, you were right.
Gordon had the most points of anyone in a single game during the tournament with 29 against Georgia Tech. Meanwhile, the ACC had three players over 20 points in Boston College's Tyrese Rice (28), Virginia's Mamadi Diane (22) and NC State's J.J. Hickson (21).
The Big Ten had better get it's act together and start recruiting kids who can create opportunities to score, rather than relying on a "system" where players become so enveloped, they fail to realize that each one on the court is capable of taking his man off the dribble. All these kids want to be pro ballers and make it to the NBA, right? They had better learn some moves if that's ever going to happen because the only one with a guaranteed ticket to the "Association" right now is Gordon, and he should be in an Illini jersey not an Indiana jersey. I hate you Kelvin Sampson, you dirty, dirty man.

THE BEER TENT: 'TIS THE SEASON FOR TROUBLE
by dswinder, Sons of Sam Malone
Here at Epic Carnival, we meet weekly under The Beer Tent to shoot the shit. I, dswinder, will be the ringleader, but you can join in on the discussion every Tuesday at 3ish.
Oh, the Holiday season. There's nothing like it. Why, with smells of mistletoe, gingerbread, Christmas trees, and coaching vacancies wafting by our nostrils, well, it's enough to drive any man into a state of eternal bliss.
Though its still early, we've already been treated to a horn o' plenty of college football head coaching job openings. Even Ole Miss gave their General the boot, and we all know they rarely rotate coaches (five since '93). Now that Orgeron is out, the Rebels are left with a vacancy in the midst of the SEC. Wait. My sources tell me that Ole Miss shall want no longer. It appears they've landed the Nutts.
Yes, as you've surely already had roll through your feed reader, the Ole Miss Rebels have filled the seat left open by departing Ed Orgeron with recent Arkansas resigner, Houston Nutt.
Oh Ole Miss, what ethics you have. Oh, how you fire coaches after you've exhausted the cause for hiring them in the first place (see: David Cutcliffe/Eli Manning graduation). Oh, how you easily forget what it means to have five winning seasons, going 44-29, while bringing the university its first ten win season in three decades. Oh, how quickly you lose all memory of certain text messages when hiring a replacement for Eddy O.
What? You forgot? Surely no one fails to remember that Houston Nutt has a history of being quite textually active with a certain blond media member.
Oh, it's not that the Rebels forgot that they want to put academics first. It's not that the texts slipped their minds. No, I think it's more that teams today are willing to sacrifice ethics for the sake of what they see as winning by way of a trouble maker.
Like Ole Miss, the Indiana Hoosiers enjoy throwing ethos out the door. Yes, IU possesses quite the fondness for recruiting violations. Kelvin Sampson anyone?
Sampson didn't just break official rules while coaching Oklahoma, making hundreds of illegal phone calls to recruits. He also managed to step on the collective toes of the Big Ten, and break the unwritten code of recruiting within the conference. One would think it reasonable enough to expect coaches within your conference to back off players who have already given a verbal commitment elsewhere within the same conference. One would think. But not to ole Kelvin. You see, just in case anyone forgot, Kelvin Sampson thought it perfectly ethical to heavily recruit Eric Gordon, drawing the top recruit away from conference rival, Illinois.
And I won't begin to address Alabama and Nick Satban.
But this complete lack of ethics isn't an epidemic trapped within the confines of college athletics. Lest you forget the Miami Dolphins just recently showed their willingness to give second, third, fourth, and five millionth chances to a player who has an unhealthy obsession with the ganj. Sure the Phins are off to an 0-11 start (0-10 pre-Ricky), but does a running back who's been out of the league for two years really remedy a situation as pitiful as they have going in Miami? Apparently not. After that 6 rushes for 15 yards and coming up injured performance last night, it looks like the Dolphins will find themselves in need of a new trouble maker with which to fix this problem of a team. May I suggest Maurice Clarett?
No, it's definitely not Alzheimer's or any other form of memory loss to blame for these ridiculous hirings. The blame can be laid solely on the backs of a lack of ethical fortitude. Well, that and maybe the scent of mistletoe, gingerbread, and Christmas trees.

INDIANA IS MAKING INAPPROPRIATE CALLS
by Sterling Gould, More Credible
How many times do you have to get caught red handed stealing from the cookie jar? I guess if you're Indiana basketball coach Kelvin Sampson, it could be as many times as your assistant coach will break the rules. The NCAA has been breathing down Indiana assistant Rob Senderoff's throat, so it's understandable that he'll step down to not be so much of a "distraction":
So far, the investigation has cost the Hoosiers one basketball scholarship and coach Kelvin Sampson a $500,000 pay raise. The NCAA is still conducting its own investigation, which could lead to further sanctions.
"Rob Senderoff has decided it is in his and Indiana University's best interests that he voluntarily resign," the school said in a statement.
Senderoff, a former assistant at Kent State, was hired by Sampson in May 2006, the same month the NCAA sanctioned Sampson for making 577 impermissible phone calls between 2000-2004 while he was the coach at Oklahoma.
I don't see what the big deal is. Why would you step down after being hired to be in such elite of a position? NCAA Violations? Pussy stuff. So what he's made over 550 phone calls in a 5 year span to recruits? Do you realize how many times I've dialed 1-800-Fat-Girl? My cell phone bill would make his cell phone bill his cell phone bitch.
You really need to let your recruits know that you care about them, a lot. You need to hear out their personal feelings, ask them how their day was, see if they're still practicing their mid-range jumper, what they're wearing to bed that night, and all of that important stuff. You can't get the full range of a person just with that few of phone calls.
No wonder Oklahoma has never been a success on the hard court. Sampson's boys just weren't doing their job right. By the way, we could use a few more readers here at EC... so uhh...
What you wearin' tonight cutie? ;)
