PLEASE LET O.J. MAYO FALL TO MEMPHIS

by Scott Sargent, Waiting For Next Year

By now, you all know the story of how O.J. Mayo recruited himself to play at the University of Southern California. He wouldn't give out his number - he made the calls. Mayo plays, team goes to the NCAA Tournament, gets bounced. Rumors circulate of the thousands of dollars that were sent Mayo's way. No one is surprised.

Along the same lines of being unsurprised, a recent post over at DraftExpress lays out the latest in terms of Mayo's tryouts. Or, lack of tryouts, would be more like it.

Mayo has reportedly yet to schedule even a single workout, and will probably do so after he officially hires his new agent. We’ve been told by several sources that Mayo may try to pull a Yi Jianlian and only work out for Chicago, Miami, New York and Los Angeles, while shunning the smaller market teams such as Minnesota, Seattle and Memphis.
How convenient. The nerve of the NBA! How dare they place franchises within cities that are not among the largest, most-poplated in the world!

Obviously, the Clippers would be the team out of Los Angeles that has a chance at selecting Mayo. Unless the Bulls or Heat trade down, O.J. looks to be this year's version of Al Horford. You know, the guy who isn't quite in the "Top 2," but is among the "Best of the rest." One way or the other, Derrick Rose and Michael Beasley will be going to one of the black and red teams.

Mayo may be in luck in regard to Minnesota. Kevin McHale is obviously in no hurry to rebuild this team, and is looking to move the third pick. If not, he'll likely be adding another big man to the roster (you know, since Al Jefferson's 20 and 12 isn't good enough) in the form of either Kevin Love or Brooke Lopez.

Seattle/Oklahoma City appears to have a thing for Jerryd Bayless or even Eric Gordon. Of course, they could always go with Mayo, but the team is leaning on Kevin Durant to be the face of the franchise for years to come. Drafting Mayo would only lead to conflict of the PR nature.

Which leaves us with Memphis. A team that just traded away its best player for next to nothing. A team that has had trouble even getting players to come and try out for the possible draft selection; a team that is more known for the college that plays right down the street from their home court. Some of these guys would rather pass up the money of the fifth player overall than play for Memphis - which would make it that much better if they were to draft Mayo; a player who thinks he'll have the league by the balls from day one.

I mean, can they not sell the allure of playing along side Brian Cardinal!? This thing should sell itself.

Even better would be the look on O.J.'s face when New York is one pick away, while he's handed a powder blue and yellow jersey with the #1 on it.

At this point, the only thing better than Memphis drafting Mayo would be Memphis drafting Mayo, and then moving the franchise back to Vancouver. Hey, at least it's a big city.

A SENSIBLE, YET FIRM, PUNISHMENT FOR USC ATHLETICS

by WCT, The Ship of Fools

If I ruled the world, I'd free all my sons I would offer sensible, yet firm punishments for all improprieties. In most situations, there is no reason to make things complicated, or to try to "make an example" out of those who do wrong. In most cases, a simple solution, where all parties know exactly where they stand, and all repercussions are cut and dry, is usually the best one.

Take the situation at USC for example. If the allegations surrounding O.J. Mayo are true, (I recognize that this is a big "if," but for the purposes of this post, let's assume they are) and the allegations surrounding Reggie Bush are true, (another big "if," but stay with me) then the NCAA needs to act, and they need to act now. I am not saying that the USC athletic department was either involved, or complicit when these two guys were receiving cash and gifts, but there is definitely (to borrow everyone's favorite phrase when describing stuff like this) a "lack of institutional control." I refuse to fly off the handle, as some have, and suggest that the school should be given the so-called "death penalty," as SMU football did in the '80s -- when the athletic department literally helped boosters pay students -- or that Reggie Bush should be stripped of his Heisman trophy, and the 2005 Trojans' BCS championship no longer be recognized -- honestly, what kind of penalties are those? -- but I think something has to be done that sticks.

So here is my suggestion: The entire USC athletic department (because obviously this problem spans more than any one sport) should be placed on a sort of "probation" for five years. Now, this probation should not prevent them from participating in any postseason games, or cause them to lose scholarships, or cause them to be on television any less. This is just sort of a warning. However, if anything, and I mean anything like this surfaces during this five year period, then serious sanctions (including possibly the death penalty) have to be made. I mean, if one guy steps out of line, if Pete Carroll makes one phone call more than you are allowed by NCAA standards, I drop the hammer. If a basketball booster gives a player a stick of gum without charging him for it, I throw the book at them. This is a true zero-tolerance policy for the next five years. And if they keep their nose clean for the five-year period, then the probation is lifted, and everything goes back to normal.

Under this punishment structure, you give the athletic department the benefit of the doubt that they didn't have any idea what was going on with two of the biggest and most high-profile student athletes in the history of their school (something I personally do not believe, but whatever). At the same time, you put them on notice that this type of activity is not something that is going to be tolerated at all during the probationary period. There is no need to launch an investigation, that will take months (if not years), and then hand out a punishment sometime in the the future that will either hurt no one, or hurt parties that had nothing to do with the violations. You don't punish the, ahem, innocent athletes that are there now (or sometime in the future), instead, you light a fire under the ass of the athletic director and coaches now, and motivate them to monitor what their players are doing and who they are dealing with. They cannot use the excuse of not knowing what is going on with their players and their boosters, because they are forced to make it their business to know.

I realize that Mayo has denied the allegations against him, just like Bush denied the allegations against him, just like the USC athletic department denied knowing anything about either set of allegations. But honestly, we as sports fans have heard so many phony denials and so many weak apologies recently that its getting harder and harder to know who and what to believe anymore. But I'm sure that everyone, even the biggest and most passionate USC fanatic (if such a thing exists! zing!) must be willing to accept this zero-tolerance probation, right? RIGHT??

APR THOUGHTS

by Brian P. Foley, The College Baseball Blog

Recently the Academic Progress Rate came out and the University of New Hampshire's Men's Basketball team was cited for low academic standards and have lost a scholarship for next season. The school actually beat the NCAA to the punch by cutting scholarships at the university from 13 to 12 so it will make no difference to the program.

I need to give you some background on the situation before continuing. I worked with the Men's Basketball team at UNH as a student assistant. There was some less then stellar student athletes which came through the school that were more interested in playing NBA basketball instead of getting an education. I challenge any Epic readers to come up with one New Hampshire basketball player that has ever played in the NBA?

I believe that the Academic Progress Rate is necessary to hold the coaching staffs of many universities responsible for the student-athletes that are a part of their program. The argument against the APR is that the student athletes that transfer out of the program and get their degree somewhere else do not count as a graduate of the program. One of the other arguments is that the coaching staffs are not held to their commitment to the players when they leave the university to go to a different school.

I think we should all go to the European system of separating athletics and education while stopping how we try to combine things in this country.

PROVIDENCE DECIDES TO PLAY KENO

by Brian P. Foley, The College Baseball Blog

Providence College announced Keno Davis as their new basketball coach on Tuesday replacing Tim Welsh who was fired after ten seasons in charge of the basketball program. Davis comes from Drake University where he was the head coach for one season leading them to their first NCAA tournament since 1971. They were ranked at the end of the season in both major college basketball poll with the AP ranking them at 14 and the Coaches putting them at 23.

The interesting part of this story is that the Friars were shunned by three big time mid-major coaches. PC alumnus and former assistant coach Jim Larranaga was the initial first choice for the school but he decided to keep his job at George Mason rather then taking over the program. The next choice to become public was Travis Ford of UMass but he decided at the last minute to turn down the job and a double in pay to go back to Amherst. The Friars also tried to get Davidson head coach Bob McKillop but he also turned them down. They finally were able to get Keno to come to the school but he was the fourth choice on the list.

Lets take a look at the Providence College program and decided if it is a good job for an upcoming coach. PC plays all of their home games off campus at the aging Dunkin Donuts Center which opened up in 1972 and needs a major upgrade in terms of amenities. I think the only facility that is worst then the Dunk is the RAC that Rutgers plays in. PC also plays in the Big East which is one of the best conferences in the nation so it will be very tough to compete year in and year out with the big name schools in the conference.

The biggest issue with the Providence College program is the fans of the basketball program. They believe that they should make the Final Four every single season and if they do not make it then it is an ultimate failure. The fans continue to live in the heydays of Joe Mullaney, Dave Gavitt, and Rick Pitino who all brought the Friars to the national scene in College Basketball. PC won the NIT in 1961 and 1963 while making the NCAA Final Four in 1973 under Dave Gavitt and in 1987 under Rick Pitino.

The PC fans need to give Keno a chance to succeed and just be competitive in the Big East as the PC job has become a stepping stone for a bigger university as the school has lost its luster in recruiting the best players in the nation.

PC FANS WAKE UP, RICK PITINO IS NOT WALKING THROUGH THAT DOOR!

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP GAME LIVE BLOG

by Brian P. Foley, The College Baseball Blog

8:20 pm-I will be bringing you the live blog of the National Championship game for 2008. We are getting set to see the Memphis Tigers who has a 38-1 record with the lone loss coming to Tennessee take on the Kansas Jayhawks who have a 36-3 record. I will try to keep things lively throughout with some random stuff from the internet. Here is a very good link about the best divorce letter ever thanks to our buddy Sterling Gould.

8:55pm- My buddy who played at UConn back in the day with Ben Gordon thinks Memphis is going to take the title tonight under John Calipari. I tend to agree with him since I am not a fan of the Kansas team's style.

9:00pm- I am done with this Dancing with the Stars stuff....I don't need to see Adam Carrolla dancing in a Zorro mask. Even though I like Cheryl Burke!!! Who wouldn't love to spend a night with her?

9:02pm- I hate BILLY PACKER!!!
9:07pm- Masters Promo #1...Anyone else turned off by how pleasant they make the Masters sound?
9:10pm- Our buddy Darren Heitner of The Sports Agent Blog has found out who every player is going to be represented by. The full article is available here.

9:30pm- Derrick Rose gets an AND-1....16:40 left
