"This is the best game I've ever been a part of to win," Trembley said of his team's effort. "I've never seen anything like that. That's a real credit to our team. That's probably the biggest understatement I can say. That's just incredible."
Here are the video highlights:
Captain Jeter had one of the worst games that I have seen from him in a long, long time. His costly mistakes did not directly cost his team a victory but they severely limited the Yankees' chances.
Jeter was on 2nd with 2 outs and the Orioles put in a new reliever to face Arod. Orioles 3B calls a fake timeout, Jeter freezes, and the Orioles pick him off second to end the rally with Arod never seeing one pitch.
Top 9, score tied at 8, Johnny Damon leads off the inning by reaching first. Jeter is unable to bunt him over and then strikes out.
Bottom 11, Orioles down 9-8, 1 out, Melvin Mora on 1st base, Aubrey Huff lines one into the gap, Jeter throws the relay home instead of holding it to prevent Huff from advancing to third base. 2 walks and a hit later, ball game for the Orioles.
I am sure Jeter will rebound in Wednesday night's game, the Yanks will eventually heat up this summer to contend and the Orioles will continue to scrap around 500.
Shatner's surprising Orioles look to sweep the Yankees at Camden Yards today for the first time since 2005, stretching their overall win streak to four games.
While writers and fans alike have been impressed by the Orioles quick start, the biggest stunner came last night when it took clean shaven right fielder Nick Markakis 4 2/3 innings to grow a full beard, up 2 innings from his season average.
On Monday, January 28, 2008, the news hits the wires that the long-rumored deal between the Mariners and Orioles, where Seattle would get ace lefty Eric Bedard and the Orioles would get a slew of prospects, may be close to finishing. Why has the deal taken nine days and counting to get done?
10. It's a really long way from Baltimore to Seattle
9. The Mariners and Orioles didn't want to upstage the Johan Santana trade, the Super Bowl, or A-Rod opting out of his contract
8. Orioles are still hoping to move those last few BEDARD jerseys in the gift shop
7. As this is baseball in 2008, both teams have to be sure they have exchanged equal steroid dependence
6. Small market teams have to use "separate but equal" league offices and personnel, and the Small Markets Only bathroom and water fountain has been out of service for weeks
5. Before they pull the trigger, the Orioles want to break the news personally to both of their remaining fans
4. Both teams really want to make sure it's OK with Boston and New York first
3. Can't get Billy Beane, who has been calling nonstop to see if either team could use more players with more than a week of MLB experience, off the phone long enough to finish this thing
2. There's still time for the sanctions to work
1. A crippling sense of ennui, since the Angels, Red Sox, Yankees and Tigers are going to take all of the playoff spots anyway
After days of speculation as to whether or now Erik Bedard is going to be headed to the Seattle Mariners, it looks like today will be the day we find out.....or will it?
If I were a fan of the Mariners or the Orioles I believe I'd probably be at my wits end at this point in trying to figure out whether or not this trade is happening. It has to be completely frustrating to think one of your top players/prospects is being traded and then have to wait days to find out if it's really true.....and that's why fans aren't in charge of teams. We'd be trading everyone left and right without giving it a second thought.
While I'm sure the teams are also anticipating the end of this 'saga', it is up to them to do their due diligence in figuring out whether or not this is a good deal for their respective teams. The Mariners seems more than ready to ship out their top prospect and some other players in exchange for a burgeoning left-handed superstar.....on the other hand, the Orioles seem to be not so sure that giving up a valuable piece of their starting rotation is such a good idea for a team that is trying to keep their fan base from burning down team headquarters......Conflicts are situated everywhere.
So, what do I think will happen? Your guess is as good as mine. Dealing with the Orioles this off-season has been.....shaky, at best. Just ask any Cubs fan who thought they had Brian Roberts two months ago. We could find out today whether Bedard is going to the Pacific Northwest....or we may be left waiting until the beginning of Spring Training to find out. At this point, only the Orioles management knows.
This moring I feel sorry for fans of the Baltimore Orioles. For the past few years the other fans around baseball have been wondering what the heck happened to the once might Baltimore Franchise....or at least I did. This is a franchise that was once filled with proud players like Cal Ripken, Jim Palmer, Brooks Robinson, etc...After seeing the last place Texas Rangers put up 30 runs in a game yesterday I've realized what is wrong with the Orioles.....they are quitters.
I can see giving up 10 runs in a ballgame, and maybe 20 if things were going really badly; but 30 runs, no way. It was announced before the game that Orioles interim manager Dave Trembley would be returning for the '08 season....I think he's regretting that decision today. There is no way a major league team should be giving up 30 runs in a game, no freaking way...unless they give up.
Do you even realize how difficult it is for a good team to score 30 runs, let alone a last place ball club? Since last Thursday the first place Chicago Cubs have scored 32 runs in 6 games, and those 5+ runs a game is above the league average! I've heard of teams laying down during games on Sunday or on a day before a long road trip, but this is ridiculous.
Pitiful. That was my first thought when I heard the score. I didn't think it was 'cool', I didn't think it was 'funny'. I thought it was pitiful for a team full of 'supposed' major league caliber players to play so poorly. It's bad for the game and it's bad for fans of the Orioles for things like this to happen.
I'll stop my rant now so you can go back to thinking that this was such a 'cool' thing. There hasn't been a team do it in the last century, woo hoo! There is a reason for that. Major League teams aren't supposed to quit.
