DOC BROWN'S IMMINENT LUMINARIES: DARRELL SCOTT

by Rupert, Ghosts of Wayne Fontes

The one and only Doctor Emmett Brown has joined the Epic Carnival team to provide insight on some of the great sports stars of the future. Having placated all potential problems in Hill Valley, he has turned his attention to sports. He has seen that the future has to offer and is here to give us a sneak peak. Brown is going to drop by from time to time and show us a variety of some stars you might not have heard of yet, but certainly will. These are some of the heavy hitters in high school sports today who are sure to make an impact on the college scene before long.

"There's that word again; 'heavy.' Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the earth's gravitational pull?"

With Terrelle Pryor gobbling up all the media attention in past few weeks, it seems folks have started to forget about Darrell Scott. If Terrelle is Vince Young, Darrell is LaDanian Tomlinson. This kid has recruiters from coast to coast both drooling and wishing upon their lucky stars. He's the real deal and a lock to make a huge impact from day one (particularly if he chooses the horrible Buffaloes). In a chat with Rivals.com message board users, Scott rehashed his trip to Texas and enforced that they are definitely in the top 3, along with Colorado and LSU. The February 6th signing day is narrowly approaching, so stay tuned to see who hits the lucky jackpot.

Name: Darrell Scott

Position: Running Back

Vitals: 6'0" / 204 pounds / 3.32 40-yard dash

Ranking: Rivals 5 stars / Scout 5 stars

Video:

Strengths: Where do we begin? He is blazingly fast with great size and power. Scott will beat you with his speed or he'll knock you on your ass. He is the protege of the complete running back - at least as close as you can get for an 18 year-old. He is big and fast enough to go between the tackles, but quick and fast to break the big play. For his size, perhaps the most impressive skill is his shake n' bake. He's quite quick laterally and turns against the grain well. Overall, Scott is really a rare combination of speed and power - not quite Purple Jesus rare, but not too far off.

Stats/Accolades: Is 2,433 yards and 34 touchdowns in a senior season good? It's not good enough? Fine, how about 3,194 yards and 45 touchdowns in his junior season? Darrell Scott is the unanimous top rated running back in the 2008 class and won California junior of the year last year.

Criticisms: I didn't see much with my expert eyes, but more refined professionals have mentioned his hands on numerous occasions. Bad hands could definitely hurt his prospects, not so much in college, but more so when he starts thinking NFL. Pass catching runners are a must these days in the pros. I suspect it's due to the fact that most coaches play fantasy football with reception points. That should sum it up right there: if I'm resorting to crummy fantasy football jokes in the criticisms section, you know they don't really exist.

Interesting Factoid: This is my favorite Question/Answer combo from the Rivals chat.

User: Do you prefer to shake somebody in the open field, stiff arm them, or just run them over?

Scott: I'd prefer a shake/stiff arm combo if I had to choose but whatever it takes.

DOC BROWN'S IMMINENT LUMINARIES: TERRELLE PRYOR

by Rupert, Ghosts of Wayne Fontes

In the most obvious selection of all time, this week's featured luminary is again the number one recruit in his respective sport, Terrelle Pryor. Why so obvious you ask? Well, we try to not to bias around here, but this column is brought to you from a blue-blooded Michigan fan. I can't help but get excited from time to time and this is one of those times. Unless you have been smoking opium in a den that sells Gucci purses under the N-Q-R-W subway line for the past week, you heard Rich Rodriguez took over at Michigan and may have brought a certain star quarterback in his wake. Terrelle Pryor is the dreamboat that Rodriguez wants to help spread out his offensive unit.

Name: Terrelle Pryor

Position: QB /occasionally also listed as Athlete

Vitals: 6'6" (Insane, I know), 235 pounds (ditto), 4.4 40-yard time

Ranking: Rivals 5 stars / Scout 5 stars

Video:

Strengths: Pryor is a phenomenal specimen in every sense of the game. He's quick; he's fast; he's athletic; he's competitive; he has a great arm; and he's a winner. He led his Jeanette, PA team to a state title and a 16-0 season under intense scrutiny and immense pressure. The Vince Young comparison are rampant and well warranted. He is a threat to burst out of the pocket with blazing speed and jumping bean quickness. His arm is very good also and he throws a very accurate ball, especially for a high school QB who is known for his making plays with his feet. The spread offense was made for Terrelle Pryor.

Stats/Accolades: My favorite stat is the fact that Pryor led his team to 14 mercy rules in 16 games. In his senior season he ran and passed for over 1,900 yards - each, not total. He was nominated to play in the Army All-America bowl. Finally, he is the #1 rated overall recruit, quarterback, and scrambler in the 2008 recruiting class. Pryor already has a dedicated fan site with a wealth of data if you just cannot get enough of him.

Criticisms: The challenge for Pryor is more related to dealing with the hype. There isn't much on the field he cannot do. He will have a tough job cut out for him emotionally, which will be no easy feat for a freshman. He's likely to oust a highly regarded starter (possibly Ryan Mallett), have a tough role to prove his leadership ability to the upper classman, and face ridiculous media coverage from day one. According to Scout, he needs to work on his 3 point game, finishing and ball handling. I guess they aren't too worried about his footwork behind center, but whoever lands Pryor may have to worry about those ankles on the court throughout basketball season.

Interesting Factoid: Pryor allegedly has a lot of influence over a couple of The Ohio State University's top recruits as well. Notably, if Pryor goes to Michigan, there is speculation that his buddies - a couple of OSU top commits - may follow. I believe 5-star center, Michael Brewster is the top concern involved in these rumors as the two are good friends. Somewhere, Tressel is drunk and wearing Uggs. Pryor is also a highly recruited small forward in basketball.

DOC BROWN'S IMMINENT LUMINARIES: GREG MONROE

by Rupert, Ghosts of Wayne Fontes

For some reason, this column typically drives me to dig up some randoms. It seems like a cop out to just hit the Rivals list and pick from the cream of the crop. Today, I made an exception. I figure if the guy is the most highly recruited, Rivals #1 basketball senior in the country, he's gotta be pretty good right? Well, lets find out. This is Greg Monroe and he is headed to Georgetown. I guess the Hoyas aren't going to disappear after they win the title this year.

Name: Greg Monroe

Position: Power Forward

Ranking: Rivals 5 stars / Scout 5 stars

Video:

Strengths: There isn't a whole lot you need to read here. He is the perfectly size, shape, speed, level of smoothness, degree of swift, etc. He's the prototype. He also has great presence as he runs the court very well and is a solid post passer. He has a very good outside shot and can dunk effortlessly.

Stats/Accolades: Isn't being the #1 player in the country good enough? Monroe was the 15th ranked player and 2nd ranked underclassman in the Nike Camp Fab 50 in 2006. Hoops Report says "he could be the best big man since Greg Oden."

Criticisms: There's not a whole lot of glaring criticisms, but the one thing I noticed is that he doesn't play very aggressive in the post. That may be more a function of the highlights though. He seems to favor a more uncontested "shoot over somebody" shot , than to take it strong to the rack like Jerry Stack.

Interesting Factoid: Judging by his music selection, I am guessing Greg Monroe is either really chill, enjoys repetition, or has a recording studio. I am going to go with choice #1.

DOC BROWN'S IMMINENT LUMINARIES: MARCUS JORDAN

by Rupert, Ghosts of Wayne Fontes

It's a hoops day today. Today we are looking at a kid with some pretty big shoes to fill. In fact, he has the best selling shoes in the history of shoes to fill. Yep, it's Marcus Jordan, the son of the one and only, MJ. I'm sure everyone will be shocked to hear that Michael Jordan's son is a great player. Conversations about Marcus usually end up in a debate about who is better, Marcus or his brother Jeffrey. Whoever you like, Marcus putting the naysayers to rest. According to USA Today, Marcus is expected to be a top conference point guard in the NCAA.

Name: Marcus Jordan

Vitals: 6'3" / 180 pounds

Position: Guard

Ranking: Marcus is a sophomore, graduating in 2009, but he's currently a 3-star on Rivals and 2-star on Scout. Surely, we'll see that progress.

Video:

There isn't a whole lot out there in terms of recruiting videos, but here is a clip of Marcus showing his inherited clutch as he takes over to win the game with time expiring.

And for good measure. Don't forget where you came from Junior.

Strengths:According to the Chicago Sun-Times Blog, Marcus Jordan is the best sophomore recruit in the state of Illinois. He is making a name for himself for exactly the things you would expect from a Jordan. He is an explosive slasher and considered nearly unstoppable off the drive. He has great speed and can fly up and down the court on the break. Marcus is also known for unselfish play and a very coachable player, despite obvious pressures to take over and put on a show.

Stats/Accolades: Marcus hasn't garnered any individual accolades quite yet, but he is an integral part of the #22 high school team in America as a sophomore.

Criticisms: The obvious criticism is his strength. For his age, he is strong player but his game will improve as the guns fill in. His height is also a question mark. At 6'3", he can certainly be a serviceable point guard, but as a player who often relies on creating his own shot, it may present issues.

Interesting Factoid: Marcus wears prescription goggles on the court. Hopefully , he'll grow a giant Kurt Rambis mustache and break out the Rec-Specs. I can you imagine the endorsements? Also, Marcus claims he can take Mike in a game of One-on-One.

BEYOND THE ARC: FIVE REASONS '08 LOOKS GREAT

by Noce, Chicago Bull

College basketball is all about the next great talent. This year we have been amazed by freshmen Eric Gordon, Michael Beasley and O.J Mayo. Each player has come out and dazzled fans and scouts alike with their supreme abilities to score and strive amongst older "seasoned" players.

It seems that experience is not as much of a blessing in college basketball as it is a curse. If you don't have the skills to get in and get out as fast as possible, you might not ever make it to the next level.

If I had to guess today, I would say that Gordon, Beasley, Mayo and even Derrick Rose are all going to be entering the NBA Draft in 2008. Combine those four studs with DeAndre Jordan (also a freshman) from Texas A&M and a kid with a 7-foot-7 wingspan by the name of John Riek (picture after the jump) and the 2008 NBA Draft may be even better than the Oden/Durant Draft.

So my question is: who will be the studs of next year's freshman class? Check it out...after the jump.

1. Demar DeRozan, SF/SG - Compton, CA - 6-6, 180 - Committed to USC

DeRozan is an amazing athlete that wowed scouts at the Lebron Academy. He is an explosive athlete that can take defenders off the dribble and has the potential to be one of the next great collegiate players. This kid is amazingly quick with the ball, plays good defense and will be the next prized jewel claimed by USC Head Coach Tim Floyd.

2. Tyreke Evans, SG - Aston, PA - 6-4, 185 - Uncommitted

Evans, a lights out shooter currently playing for American Christian School in Pennsylvania, is being recruited from all over the East Coast. Though listed as a shooting guard, Evans is athletic enough to play multiple positions on the court and is extremely athletic. He could develop into a point guard with his superior court vision and passing skills, combined with a deadly shot.

3. Greg Monroe, PF - Harvey, LA - 6-10, 220 - Committed to Georgetown

Scout.com has Monroe rated as the #1 overall prospect in the country, and he may be if he can improve his scoring in the low post. Monroe is an athletic giant and should be a solid replacement for Roy Hibbert in John Thompson III's system. Monroe could very well end up as the next Greg Oden, if that comparison really means anything just yet.

4. Elliott Williams, SG - Collierville, TN - 6-4, 170 - Committed to Duke

The future Dukie may be the most intelligent basketball player to enter the college ranks in '08. Williams is known for his high basketball IQ and amazing athleticism. He should fit well into a system that will include freshman stud Kyle Singler and sophomore Gerald Henderson, assuming both are still around when Williams arrives in Durham.

5. Iman Schumpert, SG - Oak Park, IL - 6-4, 175 - Committed to Georgia Tech

I had to include a hometown kid in my projections, but I don't feel the least bit selfish including Schumpert because he is damn good. Another combo-style guard with good size and quickness, Schumpert is another kid that I wished Bruce Weber would have visited when he was still uncommitted. Schumpert has great instints for his position and will hopefully improve on his ballhandling and defense this year in time to be a force for the Yellow Jackets.

DOC BROWN'S IMMINENT LUMINARIES: JAKE VAN GINKEL

by Rupert, Ghosts of Wayne Fontes

We're headed back to the gridiron this week, but it's a yet another little change of pace. Today we are taking a look at one of the most highly coveted kickers in high school, Jake Van Ginkel. Jake can hit a 60 yarder at the tender age of 15 and was written about in the Wall Street Journal despite just being a freshman and playing on the freshman team. Since the time of publication, Van Ginkel hit a 57 and a 58 yarder and just missed a 63 yarder wide left with the distance. To slap a little icing on the cake, Van Ginkel has put a kickoff in the end zone off a safety - that's over 80 yards if you're counting.

Name: Jake Van Ginkel

Position: Kicker

Ranking: Van Ginkel is just a freshman, so he's not yet part of the rankings at Rivals or Scout, but he will be soon.

Video:

Strengths: His leg. He can kick really far and rather straight as well. Van Ginkel also plays QB for his freshman team and while it is doubtful he will play at the college level, it can't hurt that he can throw the ball for the occasional fake. The most interesting thing about Jake Van Ginkel is that his dad is a genius and stole my idea. He takes all five of his sons out to kick field goals for an hour and a half every day after work to turn them all into professional place kickers. You might think this is some weird shit, but I think it's brilliant. Thus, Van Ginkel has a killer work ethic to boot (5-star joke right there).

Stats/Accolades: Well, he still kicks for the Freshman team at Upland High in California, because the Varsity kicker, Kyle Hughland, is also a phenom. Thus, I think it's safe to say that Van Ginkel is the best freshman kicker in the world.

Criticisms: Um, I don't really know how to criticize a high school kicker. I suppose the logical criticism is that he hasn't faced the intense pressure of a giant stadium full of screaming blacked out drunk fans, with millions of television viewers, the game on the line, no chance to win the national championship if he misses, and minimal thanks for making it. In other words, he might get nervous and choke like Scott Norwood. Then again, there is always punting and kickoffs, so we're not too worried about him.

Interesting Factoid: Jake Van Ginkel is a dead ringer for Anthony Michael Hall from his Johnny B. Goode days. I wonder if he has 5 second hang time on his punts as well. Either way, much like Mr. B. Goode, I bet Van Ginkel will have some nice recruiting trips as well, so we'll be sure to check back on his progress through the process. His 10 year-old brother also kicked a 39 yarder in Pop Warner.

Attention University of Michigan, please put the Van Ginkel household on speed dial.

DOC BROWN'S IMMINENT LUMINARIES: TYREKE EVANS

by Rupert, Ghosts of Wayne Fontes

Since college basketball season is here, we're shifting gears in the DeLorean this week and taking a look at a hoops sensation. This week's star from the future is Tyreke Evans. Evans is a flashy guard who pretty drops street balls-like moves on a regular basis, but gets the job done. Some might call his style flashy, but none will deny that he is entertaining. Evans is one of the top recruits in the 2008 high school class and is weeding out his long list of options to the prime Big East Schools as well as Memphis and Texas. If you're into comparisons, there's only one thing that comes to mind when watching Tyreke's highlight reels - the Killer Crossover.

Name: Tyreke Evans

Position: Combo Guard (currently plays PG)

Ranking: Rivals 5 stars and Scout 5 stars

Vitals: 6'5" / 205 pounds (umm, if you say so)

Video:

Strengths: Evans obvious strength is his quickness and ability to drive. He has a lightning fast first step, which leads to a lot of layups. Tyreke can definitely create his own shot and has very good range. He is threat anytime he has the ball. He makes some very good looks, but we haven't seen the full potential of his passing, given that he is by far the best scorer on his team. He has great size for a guard and is great on the boards. Finally, his quickness affords him a valuable asset on defense as he comes up with a good number of steals.

Stats/Accolades: Five-Star Basketball Camp's Most Promising Prospect 2005

Criticisms: For his size, it is surprising that Tyreke doesn't really dunk off the drive (from what I have seen). Considering he will not have as pleasant a time taking it to the rack at the college level, he probably going to have a decent amount of his shots blocked - even on seemingly open layups. He plays a very flashy style and forces some questionable shots. This leads some to question his ability to run an offense and whether or not he will be keen to pass as opposed to his current shoot-first mentality. Finally, his ball handling is good, but not great, so he will probably play the two-guard in college.

Interesting Factoid: Tyreke must have cool parents, because besides Tyreke, his brothers are named Doc and Pooh, thus combining for maybe the greatest trifecta of brothers' names of in the history of man. Also, Tyreke is hoping to make a decision in November, so if you're a Memphis, Texas, Seton Hall, Louisville, Villanova, or Uconn fan... stay tuned.

DOC BROWN'S IMMINENT LUMINARIES: JERRELL HARRIS

by Rupert, Ghosts of Wayne Fontes

The one and only Doctor Emmett Brown has joined the Epic Carnival team to provide insight on some of the great sports stars of the future. Having placated all potential problems in Hill Valley, he has turned his attention to sports. He has seen that the future has to offer and is here to give us a sneak peak. Brown is going to drop by from time to time and show us a variety of some stars you might not have heard of yet, but certainly will. These are some of the heavy hitters in high school sports today who are sure to make an impact on the college scene before long.

"There's that word again; "heavy". Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the earth's gravitational pull?"

This week's star from the future is Jerrell Harris. All it takes is a peek at the 4 second video clip below (don't tell me you ADHD whippersnappers can't watch a 4 second video) to know what this kid is capable of doing. That poor kid is probably still in the hospital. Harris is the type of player who will spend the first half of the play knocking down the quarterback and make a tackle twenty five yards down field 10 seconds later. While he is yet to commit, he is being wooed heavily on his home turf and many suspect that Alabama and Nick Saban will get the nod, but LSU and Florida are also still on the short list. Whoever gets the signature from Jerrell is getting a franchise player on the defensive side of the ball.

Name: Jerrell Harris

Position: Outside Linebacker

Ranking: Rivals 5 stars and Scout 4 stars

Vitals: 6'2" / 220 pounds / 4.5 forty

Video:

Strengths: Harris is a hawk and made 130 tackles, 3 interceptions, and two sacks as a junior. He covers a ton of ground and does not give up until the whistle blows. It's not rare to see him cover about 40 yards on a defensive play. As you well know, he is a hard hitter and causes a lot of havoc in the backfield, particularly against the run.

Stats/Accolades: First team all-state in Alabama as a junior

Criticisms: Harris has a lot to learn before he can take on a 300+ pound lineman. He often tries to run over blockers or run around them, causing him to overpursue, making up for it with his speed. At the high school level, he gets away with it, but next year will likely be another story. He also plays like an inside linebacker a lot of the time, so will need to play a more disciplined game in his role at the college level. He has yet to utilize much in the way of pass rush moves and will need more exposure to coverage situations.

Interesting Factoid: Jerrell Harris played a key role in the movie, Menace II Society, as the kid who rides the Big Wheel when KD gets a cap in his ass. Actually, I just made that up, but I didn't really find any notable factoids. I guess it's sort of interesting that Jerrell pretty much looks like about a 29 year-old man and has not finished high school yet.

DOC BROWN'S IMMINENT LUMINARIES: WILL HILL

by Rupert, Ghosts of Wayne Fontes

Today we are taking a long look at Will Hill out of Jersey City. Given the amazing wit of local sports writers, you probably known him better as "the Thrill." Personally, I would have gone for Will "Take Your Birth Control Pill" Hill, because he is the man - but that's just me. I would say Will Hill is probably one of the most well known recruits to come out of the greater New York City area as he hails from just across the river in Jersey City. He decided to pass on the Scarlett Knights as he recently announced his verbal to Florida at the ESPN Zone in Manhattan. Look out Gainesville.

Name: Will Hill

Position: Athlete (currently Quarterback and Safety)

Ranking: Rivals 5 stars and Scout 5 stars

Vitals: 6'3" / 203 pounds / 4.4 forty

Video:

Strengths: Hill's strengths look like he is made to play college football, particularly in an explosive spread set like at the University of Florida. He's a guy who makes people miss in the open field and has great vision. He can play a lot of positions, so will make a nice Charles Woodson-esque asset wherever he ends up playing. In particular, he returned 3 punts for touchdowns, picked off three passes, and returned two kickoffs to the house - and that's in addition to 13 rushing and 11 passing TDs.

Stats/Accolades: New Jersey player of the year as a junior.

Criticisms:The looming question everyone wants to know about Hill is "What do you do with him?" He is listed as "athlete," which means he has basically spent his high school career doing anything he wants. On offense, he lines up at quarterback, but he plays like a Pop Warner QB in that it basically just saves a step by putting the ball directly in his hands. His arm is not bad, but nobody seems to really expect him to play QB in college. Personally, I don't know why everyone is so quick to write him off as he reminds me a whole lot of Dennis Dixon. Granted, he needs to work on arm strength and get a lot of coaching, but who knows. At 6'3", he's certainly likely to get a look at wide receiver, but is primarily expected to play in the defensive backfield. He also needs to learn to tuck the ball away or he will be coughing up a lot of fumbles. Finally, while he is listed at a 4.4 forty, he looks a little slower than that in the videos.

Interesting Note: Will Hill's cousin, Al-Ghaffaar Lane, is headed to Rutgers to play defensive end, but it apparently wasn't enough to sway Will from crossing state lines in favor of the Gators.

DOC BROWN'S IMMINENT LUMINARIES: TYRON SMITH

by Rupert, Ghosts of Wayne Fontes

This week, we are taking a look at the future anchor of the USC offensive line (verbal commitment). We figured it's only fair to throw USC a bone since they have such a rough life having lost to Harbaugh and Stanford so early in the season. We feel so sorry for the Trojans.

Name: Tyron Smith

Position: Offensive Tackle

Rivals/Scout Ranking: Rivals 5 stars and Scout 5 stars

Vitals: 6'5" / 260 pounds / 5.1 forty

Video:

Strengths: Tyron Smith has great technique and giant mitts to manhandle opposing linemen. He plays in a primarily pass oriented offense, so he is a particularly solid pass blocker for a high school player. Smith is known for a great work ethic and drive as he loves to play on both sides of the field and is a defensive standout as well.

Stats/Accolades: Two-time Nike Camp MVP

Criticisms: Smith is a bit undersized for an elite college lineman, so he will need to focus on gaining some body mass. His body is a rock and he has great strength, but will need a wider base. This is certainly par for the course, but it is really his only area of weakness. His run blocking is solid, but the Rancho Verde offense is a pass heavy team, so he'll likely have some work to do here as well.

Extremely Annoying Factoid: Tyron Smith is not the top ranked offensive tackle in the country - Matt Kalil is - and he has also committed to USC.
